Caractères / symptômes
Maladie dégénérative de la peau (anomalies du collagène): fragilité et élasticité exagérée de la peau, ainsi que troubles de la cicatrisation des plaies. Âge: >1.5 an (lié à l’utilisation). D’autres tissus riches en collagène (tendons, ligaments, gros vaisseaux sanguins) peuvent aussi être touchés (Bowser JE et al 2014).
La maladie n’est pas curable.
L'hyper-élasticité et la fragilité de la peau sont des symptômes cardianux du syndrome de Ehlers-Danlos, un groupe hétérogène d’affections génétiques du tissu conjonctif (voir le syndrome d'Ehlers-Danlos chez l’homme). HERDA et le Syndrome du poulain de sang fragile appartiennent à ce groupe. Des cas indépendants de la mutation PPIB ont été décrits (Rüfenacht S et al 2010Steelman SM et al 2014). On peut s’attendre à ce que d’autres mutations causales soient identifiées à l’avenir.
Contraintes

Restriction sévère héréditaire d'une fonction organique (peau); hyperélasticité de la peau; risque accru de blessures (surtout l’emplacement de la selle, le dos, les membres), hématomes, les blessures se cicatrisent mal, le cheval ne peut plus être utilisé (selle, voiture): dommages qui provoquent des pertes de fonctionnalité affectant l’état général.
