80% des franches-montagnes avec prognathie maxillaire sont porteurs d’un allèle présentant un risque sur le chromosome 13. Signer-Hasler H et al 2014a supposent l’existence d’un gène majeur.

Prédisposition familiale (DeBowes RM & Gaughan EM 1998, cit. Verwilghen D et al 2008).

Heritabilité (h2): 0.09 - 0.20 (paso peruano; Montovani R et al 2010a)

Le mode de transmission génétique est complexe et n’est pas défini exactement. Un mode dominant est une hypothèse évoquée (Jones WE 1982)

Plusieurs organisations d’élevage excluent les reproducteurs affectés de prognathie (p. ex. AQHA 2015)
Caractères / maladie

Anomalies craniofaciales congénitales: anomalie dentaire et malposition maxillaire. Le maxillaire supérieur du cheval est plus long que la mandibule (maxillaire inférieur) => malocclusion (MAL2, Easley J et al 2011). Les incisives supérieures et inférieures ne sont plus placées complètement  les unes sur les autres (différence ≥3mm). Dans le pire des cas, les incisives ne sont plus en contact => absence d‘usure.

Conséquences: usure anormale, surdents, troubles de la mastication (lorsque les prémolaires et les molaires sont concernées; angl. CT=cheek teeth), blessures douloureuses des muqueuses. Difficultés à brouter.

La prognathie chez le cheval miniature peut être associée au nanisme 
Contraintes Restrictions d’une fonction organique (bouche avec les dents, comportement alimentaire) qui affectent l’état général et la qualité de la vie; troubles du comportement alimentaire.

Les critères déterminants pour l’évaluation des contraintes sont en particulier:
