Merkmale / Symptome |
Metabolische Störung des Kalium Austausches im Muskel (Hyperkaliämie): nicht vorhersehbare Episoden der Muskelschwäche und der unkontrollierten Muskelkontraktionen, Hypertrophie der Muskulatur (Zuchtziel), Muskelzittern und Schwitzen im Ruhezustand oder in Stresssituationen; Vorfall des dritten Augenlids. Verschiedene Faktoren (Futterumstellung, Transport, Trainingsbeginn, Stress, usw.) können einen Anfall auslösen. Die Anfälle können leichtgradig bis schwerwiegend sein (Herzversagen, Kollaps, Tod)Heterozygote Tiere (H/N) sind betroffen aber in weniger ausgeprägtem Mass als Homozygote (H/H).
Die Krankheit ist nicht heilbar

Belastungen |
Erblich bedingte tiefgreifende eingeschränkte Organfunktionen (Muskulatur, Stoffwechsel). Schäden, die zu Funktionsausfällen führen und den Allgemeinzustand beeinträchtigen: Allgemeine Muskelschwäche, Lahmheit, Lähmung der oberen Luftwege (abnormales Wiehern, inspiratorische Atemgeräusche). Die Belastungen sind mit dem Zuchtziel eng verbunden (die stark entwickelte Muskulatur wird geschätzt) Massgebende Kriterien für die Beurteilung der Belastungen sind insbesondere:

Eltern
DNA-Test; gezielte Anpaarungen, Anpassung der Zuchtstrategie (Trägertiere sollten in der Zucht nicht eingesetzt werden) Betroffene Nachkommen
Diagnose (DNA-Test); befallene Tiere sollen in der Zucht nicht eingesetzt werden; palliative Massnahmen: ausbalancierte kaliumarme und kohlehydratreiche Diät (Gehalt der Futterration prüfen, Elektrolyt-Ergänzungsmitteln und abrupte Futterumstellungen vermeiden; S. Fütterung und Ernährung); Infusionstherapie; richtiges Management des Trainings, der Nutzung und der Haltungsform (Paddock- und Weidehaltung), Stresssituationen vermeiden; im schlimmsten Fall Euthanasie |
